How to Record Trades in Your Trading Journal

Today I'm going to record my first trade.  As you may know from my previous blog posts and videos. I have started a public 20K Swing Trading Challenge.

How will I record my trades?

I'd like to share with you a very unique method of recording my trades. We call this method the T20 Principle.

I have learned this technique from Mark Douglas the Great (RIP). He introduced this concept in his famous book Trading in the Zone.

I'm going to record my trades in Batches of 20. I will record each trade in a separate post. This is a modified version of our T20 Journaling Template.

6. Date/Time Exit:

9. Questions Before Trade is Taken: (I will record these in the form of a video analysis of the trade)

  • How do I feel before setting the order?
  • Intuition?
    e. g. What is your intuition about this trade? Do you think its a good setup? Do you think it will be a winner? How do you feel internally? Is the technical analysis correct? Is the market really in a good position to go in this direction?
  • Is this technically The Setup 1?
[This question is entirely focused on the technical analysis side. Is this really a perfectly good setup 1? Is M1 creating the proper setup 1 pattern? Is the M5 Chart (or the 5XHTF) creating the correct corresponding pattern? Gator is open and there is a 4-5 candle pullback? etc]

10. Post Trade Questions:

  • How Do I feel after closing the trade (or end of the session for Day Traders)?
  • Have I done well and why?
  • Have done badly and Why?
  • What Could I have done differently?

How to remain Consistently Profitable - Control Drawdowns

The Most Important thing I've learnt in life , relating to trading, is that we should risk far less than 1% per trade. Yes, that is what we are told in most of the trading books to risk 1-3%. Even though a very small proportion of the trading books talk about this very important aspect of trading i.e RISK Management in the first place.  But what they don’t consider is what happens if you have 10 losing trades in a row?

The Biggest Secret of Trading Success is: RISK MANAGEMENT.
And risk management has a lot to do with this often-ignored concept called Drawdowns. A good method should always address Risk and draw downs.
According to Investopedia

What is a 'Drawdown'A drawdown is the peak-to-trough decline during a specific recorded period of an investment, fund or commodity security. A drawdown is usually quoted as the percentage between the peak and the subsequent trough. Those tracking the entity measure from the time a retrenchment begins to when it reaches a new high. (ref)

Some people mistakenly think drawn down begins when your account balance drops below its start point. E.g. if you start with $10,000 and it drops below the 10K is when drawdowns start. I did not know until now that there are so many people who think its that way. Oh no.

We need to understand that no matter what strategy of trading you apply, drawdowns will occur. Drawdowns are REAL. They happen, they will happen, and nobody can stop them from happening.

Because it’s part of the whole game. The game of probabilities. Every now and then you will experience a batch (the T20 Principle) where you get 10 rents or more. Without a solid plan, without knowing about it in advance, it could happen and what most people would do is to abandon the plan. If your plan does not cater for this, your plan will be considered an incomplete or ineffective plan. So we must plan but not just plan, we must plan accurately, efficiently and effectively.

I learned that there are two factors, which when combined keep those damn 95% of traders below the zero line of their equity graph.

Factor 1: Draw-down periods
Factor 2: Lack of Discipline

The above could usually be the result of NO PLAN...

When there is no plan, and there are drawdowns, there really is nothing for a trader to think  but to RUN as fast as they can. The path of least resistance is to STOP doing what they are doing. In all honesty It's actually a good rational response to stop doing it because it hurts.

The problem however is that if you stop what do you do next? The usual answer is, look for a new method. There "the demon Dr. Draw" will drag them down again and so the yo yo (AO) continues and so does the hopping mechanism. Until finally someone tells you about AIMS (ahem);...

T20 Principle keeps you grounded. It helps you with staying disciplined. However, what it can't stop is the probability of those major drawdown periods. But it does teach you about it. T20 principle deals with both the discipline of trading and probabilistic mindset. It’s a one shot medicine that cures all the trading diseases there are.

This is the main issue. So, what must we do?

The answer is simple. If you are uncomfortable with the drawdowns, e.g. risking 1% per trade, 10 consecutive losers could mean nearly 10% drawdown. and if your plan is to NEVER experience a drawdown more than 5% the simple way to achieve this is to use (no , you don't need to change entry method) Risk Manipulation.

If 10% draw-down is too big, and it is big simply lower your risk per trade. That is What makes winners consistently winners. And so here comes the example of Fruit method again. This method trades aggressively, but with very conservative risk management. We enter market only with Quarter risk, adding on the rest of 3 quarters in next 2-3 add-on trades.

This way, you can keep drawdowns relatively low, within acceptable margins. If you still experience drawdown of more than 3-5% then perhaps lower the risk per trade to 0.75% or even 0.5% and then scale in to positions. Keep in mind if you score less than 70% on your discipline then the first thing to deal with is to get that figure to above 70%.

This can be done with setup 1 as well. In setup 1, what we can do is to make entries  just the way we do, but simply take half off at 1:1 and let the rest be trailed with a box. This will reduce our over profitability a tiny bit but massively reduce drawdowns and keep it within acceptable ranges. e.g. if you risk 0.5% per campaign, it would  take more than 10 trades to draw-down 5%. and before you know it you will hitting the win streaks again and back in the zone.

All the best my fellow traders and AIMSters

US Session DAX Report 11 Jan 2018

I had a very long conversation with Michal in the Skype group. This member has been with us for ages. Still trying to get to that point in trading. But today we made a lot of progress. Man my fingers are hurting from typing for hours in a trot.

B4T8

The Afternoon saw a breakout to the downside. The H1 chart was showing potential for shorts. The general consensus from that point of view was shorts. And when that is true, it does not mean you won't have long trades/setups on the M1 but that experience tells us that when HTF is trending in a certain direction, the moves on the shorter time frame will always be strong and powerful in that direction. So we traded only Sell side because that's where we got the signals.

Below you will see a Setup that I entered slightly late.

Entry:

Notice that there is a Monarch Seed short signal as well. Michal took that and got 2R. Well done Michal.

This is the trade that made 2.5R profit nicely and quickly.

Everyone thought it was over. But I say, when market is moving "be aggressive" when its going sideways and not moving be very passive.

London Session DAX Report 11 Jan 2018

So today Dax started slow at London Open.

But it did create a setup ... I missed it for some reason. It was a nice Monarch Cherry ..

Check out Sell Signal on #BitCoin #BTC.
The Setup

It spiked down and hit 2R Target near TZ1... pretty simple stuff.

Anyway so back to DAX30.

Batch 4 - Trade 7

I then took this Setup 1. Well i say setup 1 but it was actually a Setup 2 and i should have waited for a fresh box.

Entry was too early.

New Box Low was formed so put a PO for Add on. Lets MILK it.

Below: The M5 Chart showed some divergence. Oh well I thought this might bite me in the back side later. and it did.

And So it was a Rent

All that matters is that I follow my trade plan. But because I did not see the correct Setup 1 here, i will mark myself DS0. DS Total now is 6/7
Wins and Losses are Randomly Distributed

And so the Morning Session was over. Next Blog Post will be about the Afternoon Session which was alot more exciting.

DAX Report London Session 09 Jan 2018

Good Morning and G'day Everyone ...

Lets start this New Year and New Week of Trading

Today we looked at The DAX30 (German30) and found it to be trending strongly on the Hourly chart but towards a possible end of a trend on that time frame. The Daily chart shows it probably needs a 2-3 candles retrace. But that does not really help me with the time frame I wanted to trade.

Back on to the M1 chart and I found a setup. We talked about it in Skype group and took it. It took longer, Way longer than the usual. If each candle was to be considered as a D1 Chart candle it would have taken almost 8 weeks to complete. i.e. because it took 39 candles. i.e. 39 minutes. The patterns we see on the M1 chart and/or the D1 chart are LITERALLY the same. Its just a matter of "micro and macrocosm".

Here is today's Trade. Long with 10 SL and 2R target point i.e 10x2. 1R = 1 unit of Risk and 2R Profit = 2 Units of Profit. This then becomes a 1:2 RR trade. (risk / reward)

This method that we use gives us 33% winners, 33% break even trades and 33% losing trades. Now this isn't supposed to be always 33% for everything as you may well understand because these are the averages. But it should give you a good fair idea of what this method is capable of. Simply put, you'll grow your account by 6-7R i.e. 7% (@1% risk per trade) and 14% profit    per 20 trades. The T20 Principle is a Unique Powerful Technique of AIMS Stress Free Trading.

PO:
I saw a bigger box but I also saw 1. that its London Open and its possible it may breakout 2. Trend was UP
Entry and Move to Be by ATM (Thank you Steve of www.For-exe.com) ATM really makes it possible to trade this time frame. without this it would be alot harder.

BE:

Target Point Hit:  The fun part is that I went to drop my kids off to school. And before you ask why do I drop my kids mid london session, my reply is "this is what I live for".
So because the trade was in, and ATM was set all I had to do was to do nothing. So I did that and went to school. Came back and it had hit my Target Point. Happy Days...

Discipline Score 2/2

When is it too late or too early to buy a pullback?

In order to answer this question first ….  Let’s quickly do some repetition. Let’s quickly do some repetition.  Let’s throw in some trading ...
